Walter Milroy

Coach Walt Milroy graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1938, where he played basketball and baseball. He went on to the University of Washington, where he played freshman basketball and three years of varsity baseball, returning from four years in the Navy for his senior year. He was captain of Tubby Graves’ last baseball team in 1945.

After counting coaching the University Post American Legion team in 1938, Milroy’s coaching career spanned seven decades. After coaching at Queen Anne High School in Seattle as the head baseball coach and an assistant in football-later assisting in basketball. His 1949 team won the city championship.

In 1959 he transferred to the new Ingraham High School, where his first varsity basketball team had no seniors and no wins. They were 0 and 14. The sophomores from that team became Ingraham’s first tournament team in 1962. The first Metro championship was in 1964. In all, the Ingraham Rams were champions or co- champions six times between 1964 and 1980, when Milroy retired. The most outstanding was the undefeated 1969 23-0 State championship team. Ingraham’s record was 278 wins and 153 losses, during his coaching span.

In 1984 Walt volunteered as Assistant Coach for his friend Bruce Bailey at Lakeside and continued through the 1990 season. The Lakeside team record was 100 wins and 37 losses, including an 8th, 5th, and 2nd place in State tournaments.

Walt had a very partisan built-in support system from his wife Virginia, who missed one game in 21 seasons, and two daughters -Marsha, and Laurie, and son Casey, who were Ingraham graduates. Casey was a letter winner in 1971.
