Marv coached basketball for 40 years in the state of Washington. He spent 13 years at Pacific Lutheran University where he compiled a 241-123 record, 13 years at Washington State University where he compiled a 155-181 record, and 14 seasons at the University of Washington compiling a 246-146 record. His overall coaching record of 642-448 makes him one of eight men ever to register 600 or more wins on the Division 1 level. Nine of his teams earned invitations to postseason play, three times to the NCAA, twice to the NIT, and four times to the NAIA Tournament.
Twice Marv won the Pac-10 Championships, doing it back to back in 1984 and 1985, a first in Husky history. Marv has earned many coaching honors during his illustrious career. He was named NAIA District 1 Coach of the Year seven times, PAC-10 Coach of the Year twice, and the NCAA Division 1 Coach of the Year in 1984. Marv has been inducted into the NCAA Basketball Hall of Fame and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as well as the Halls of Fame on each of the campuses upon which he has coached.
