Coach Heathcote is a Washington native who got his coaching start at West Valley High School in Spokane. At West Valley from 1951-1964, his teams made four state appearances. His overall record was 165- 129 at West Valley with 10 winning seasons. Jud spent the next seven years at WSU winning 90% of his junior varsity games, then became head coach at the University of Montana. He spent five years there, compiling an 80-53 record and the 1974-75 team won a Big Sky NCAA playoff game. Jud moved to Michigan State University in 1977 and 1979 beat Indiana State for the NCAA Championship. The Spartans have made five NCAA and two NIT in Jud’s 14 years at the school. His overall record at Michigan State is 242-170.
