If one were lucky enough to follow Coach Joe Harris through a high school basketball season, they would be introduced to one of the most successful hoop programs in North Central Washington, if not the state. The numbers speak for themselves. In his 25 years of coaching, Coach Harris has accumulated over 430 wins in route to numerous league championships, five district championships, and eight state placing’s, including a state championship in 1998.
His program reflects his every day commitment to excellence and an incredible passion for the game. His focus and philosophy is predicated around defense, and the strong work ethic he expects from his players on a daily basis. Each of the past 19 years, many fans have poured into the Chelan High School gymnasium expecting to watch a team with intensity, competitive spirit, and a will to win every game. They are rarely ever disappointed.
However, while the wins, championships, and happy fans reflect Coach Harris’ work ethic and dedication, they do not best sum up his character as a coach or person. Above all the accolades, Coach Harris continually places the upmost value on commitment to his players and the relationships that consequently develop. Coach’s influence now spans the nation as many of his players have gone on to be leaders in business, education, government and the military. Even as the years have passed, they still take time to follow the Goats and pass on stories of how Coach Harris’ teachings still strongly apply in their lives. With every big game or milestone, the phone calls and messages from his previous players are a constant reminder to Coach Harris as to why he loves to coach. He has, and will continue to positively touch the lives of everyone that plays for him. It’s what keeps him going.
